EEOC and Affirmative Action

This is RACIST!

For anyone who doesn’t know, Affirmative Action is meant to keep minorities, based on race, gender, ethnicity, etc., from being discriminated against in the work force. They do this by requiring that Employers have so many people of each race, gender, and ethnicity. This sounds fantastic! What a great way to keep discrimination out of the hiring process.

Except, not really. What happens when you have a black person, and a white person applying for the same job and you are short on the amount of black employees you have? You have to keep your demographics up to code. Now, because of the rules set in place by Affirmative Action, you have to hire the black person, rather than the white person, even if the white person was better qualified. Here we have discrimination against an applicant because of his or her race. The white person was refused a job because Affirmative Action said the job should go to a black person because the employer didn’t have enough black employees.

This works the other way around as well, it could have just as easily been the black applicant that was refused a job because the employer didn’t have enough white employees. This also happens between men and women; and different ethnic groups.

Then you have the people that claim its to make up for past discrimination and oppression. No. There was a time when our parents, grandparents, or great grandparents, did discriminate against other people parents, grandparents, or great grandparents. We don’t need to make up for it by oppressing the oppressors successors. I’m sorry, but I don’t think its fair that I should have to make up for my grandparents racism. I’m not racist, I have nothing to make up for. Those times are done,(mostly), let them rest.

Now we have EEOCs, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This is a step in the right direction. It allows employees to file a complaint against their employer claiming discriminating behavior. However, some of the complaints that are filed are over the most ridiculous things. My Mom works at a hotel and she fired a breakfast bar attendant for not cleaning up, putting fresh food out, and not working for the duration of her shift. The girl filed a complaint saying that my mom was discriminating against her. I don’t remember her actual complaint, but its not discrimination if the job isn’t getting done.

There was another complaint at the hotel that the housekeeping uniforms were sexist, or something, because the top was slightly see-through. There is nothing in the handbook that says the housekeeping staff can’t wear a shirt under the uniform, in fact, it is encouraged since the uniforms are slightly see-through. None of the other employees had a problem wearing a shirt under their uniform.

The EEOC, while helpful, can be abused. I don’t mind this as much as Affirmative Action though. In attempts to stop discrimination in the work place, we’ve caused forced discrimination. Not to mention, it is legal in many states to not hire someone because of sexual orientation. (I had to throw that in there). However, most employers who would consider doing this, hire gay people all the time because they are looking for stereotypes, which many do not possess.

Rant over. Comment down below! Or don’t…
